Meeting on 11/13/01
MMS headquarters in Waltham

In attendance:

    Wayne Monsky, MD PhD: BID
    Peter Gordon, MD: President, MRS
    Erik Nelson, MD: BU
    Roderick Williams, MD: Baystate

Items:

1. Fall Forum, 2001.
Due to rescheduling of the written board examination and consequent compression of activities into November and December, opportunities for conflict-free dates on which to host the 2001 Fall Forum are limited. It was decided to postpone the forum slightly to guarantee availability of speakers and attendees, and the date of Thursday, January 24, 2002 was selected. The topic will be fellowships, specifically whether or not to pursue fellowship training, in which specialty, and the fellowship application process. Potential speakers were discussed, including representatives from academic programs, private practices, recruiters, and recent fellowship graduates. The site was tentatively selected as BWH.

2. Winter Social, 2002.
Possibility of combining the forum with a social event was discussed. This was deemed a poor compromise, and the expense of a January forum, spring forum, and two social events between January and July may be prohibitive. The winter social is therefore on hold pending clarification of finances and further discussion.

3. MRS Executive Committee Meeting.
Due to conflicts for Mark and Wayne, it was decided that Erik would represent the RFS at the MRS Executive Committee Meeting on 11/14/01 to provide an update on recent and upcoming section events and to extend thanks for support of attendance at the ACR annual meeting.

4. RSNA, 2001.
An informal get-together of all Massachusetts residents and fellows in attendance at this year’s RSNA was proposed. Erik will email the MRS RFS distribution list with additional information and to solicit suggestions for a particular evening.

5. Communication with members.
Continued attempts to augment the e-mail distribution list with additional names and addresses were reviewed. The importance of protection from virus contamination was again emphasized.

6. MRSRFS meeting sites, future dates.
The next MRS RFS meeting will be Tuesday, December 11 at 7:00 pm, at MMS headquarters in Waltham. Dr. Gordon inquired about the possibility of alternative meeting sites, such as a centrally-located restaurant, instead of catered meals at MMS. The cost of the current arrangement will be reviewed, and the sites of future meetings will be discussed.

7. AFIP screening of foreign medical graduates.
Roderick described an emerging issue relating to resident participation at the AFIP following the events of September 11. Experiences at his program have been echoed in an ongoing discussion at www.auntminnie.com, whereby foreign medical graduates are apparently facing some difficulty with demands for additional documentation before being allowed to attend AFIP. While the need for sensitivity to security concerns is understood, profiling of radiology residents may present some difficulties for residency programs. Continued monitioring of this situation was advocated.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
