Items:

1. Private Practice Opportunities
One of the current goals of the MRS RFS is to help residents to get the opportunity to experience private practice radiology in order to make an informed decision about their careers and to better create understanding between academic and private practice careers. To this end, we have provided opportunities on our website to allow practices to advertise locum tenens opportunities, moonlighting and the possibility of residents spending a half or full day on their own time to see how it functions. This experience would preferably be outside of the usual stresses. MRS has recently informed the membership of this opportunity by mail and we look forward to include as many practices as possible in this initiative. An announcement will also be made on the occasion of the upcoming annual meeting in March. All agreed that this was a worthwhile endeavor.

2. Neuroradiology Match
The recent neuroradiology match has been completed, despite the opposition of the ACR resident section executive council’s opposition. The benefit of a match system remains unclear in terms of the residents’ perspective. To this end, we began an initiative to study the match from the point of view of the fellowship directors, to gather data. Subsequently, we found that a similar survey will be undertaken by the ACR. Dr. Monsky suggested that a similar (but much shorter) survey of residents who underwent fellowship without a match system. Some present were in favor of a match, others were not. It was resolved that Dr. Monsky, Dr. Kassajarian and Dr. Chen would fashion a survey to address this issue. We will discuss the progress at the next business meeting of the MRS RFS.

3. Upcoming Events

  1. The winter social was tentatively scheduled for Thursday March 29. This function will be entirely social and should take place within Boston due to past success of that location. The location was not firmly established but The Rack was again mentioned as a good location. Funding will come from outside donors and not from MRS. The issue will be finalized at the next business meeting.
  2. An alimentary tract radiology review day for the ABR oral examination preparation sponsored by MRS RFS has been arranged by Dr. Wald with Dr. Scholz of Lahey Clinic Medical Center potentially also featuring Dr. Buonomo of Children’s Hospital of Boston to cover Pediatric GI Radiology. It was decided that the best time to have this review would be about 4-5 weeks prior to the Boards. Thus, tentative dates were selected as May 19, May 5 or April 28. These dates will be checked with the attending physicians and the location. Senior residents will have priority to register for this event, if seats are available after a deadline these will be available to everyone interested. There will be no charge for the course. The issue will be finalized at the next business meeting.
  3. A spring forum was tentatively scheduled for the third week of June. The topic will be “Business of Radiology.” It was decided that speakers might include, if possible:
    1. Human resources,
    2. Private practice managers,
    3. Academic hospital section heads,
    4. Recruiters,
    5. Headhunters,
    6. Accountants,
    7. Lawyers.
Members of RFS present at tonights meeting and all others interested to contribute will list key aspects which they feel need to be emphasized during the presentation and discussion of this complex issue. You may submit suggestions by email to rfs@bbf.1fb.myftpupload.com . This function will be partially social and should take place within Boston due to past success of that location. The location was not firmly established but the Brigham and Women’s Hospital was again mentioned as a good location. Funding will come from outside donors and not from MRS. The issue will be finalized at the next business meeting.
